Q: How should I wash my WeatherBeeta turnout rug/blanket?
A: Your WeatherBeeta rug/blanket should be washed as follows:
First, remove excess dirt and mud with a hose or stiff brush. Then, either hand wash the rug/blanket or place it in a front-loading washing machine, on a gentle cycle. We highly recommend hand washing which will prolong the life of your rug/blanket’s important waterproof, BreatheEasy outer layer. Only cool temperatures (3°C/85°F) and mild soap should be used — otherwise the coating on your rug/blanket will be compromised. Finally, the rug/blanket should be rinsed thoroughly and line dried (never machine dried!) before being stored in a cool, dry place. (Please note – most WeatherBeeta rug/blankets are sold with their own handy storage bag, the perfect container for them when not in use.)
Q: What is meant by “Waterproof” and “BreatheEasy”?
A: This is the ability of your rug/blanket to protect your horse from the elements – particularly rain! – while, at the same time keeping your horse comfortable by allowing sweat and perspiration to “wick” away and pass through the rug/blanket fabric to the outside air. Think how uncomfortable you are in a waterproof jacket that doesn’t breathe – it becomes clammy and causes chills if moisture can’t escape.)
We achieve your rug/blanket’s BreatheEasy properties by applying a special “hydrophilic” (water-loving) coating to the underside of each rug/blanket. It prevents any water from passing through it from the outside inward, but uses the temperature differences between the horse and the air,to allow perspiration molecules to travel through the fabric and evaporate, leaving your horse dry – from the inside out!
Q: My rug/blanket says it is “Ripstop” but it has ripped. Why has this happened?
A: The Ripstop weave within the fabric of your rug/blanket helps to contain rips. The distinctive “checkerboard” pattern of Ripstop is actually a series of reinforced strands interspersed within standard weave fibers. These thicker, stronger areas (the borders of the “checkers”) help prevent a rip from spreading when it starts. Ripstop does not guarantee that the fabric will not rip at all. Importantly, the stronger areas are designed to if your horse gets caught or stuck in any way.
Q: Do I need to re-proof my rug/blanket after it is washed? – i.e. per “Care Instructions for rug/blankets.”
A: Your WeatherBeeta rug/blanket may benefit from reproofing every so often if water no longer “beads off” the outer fabric when it rains but rather gets absorbed into the rug/blanket, making it heavy to carry. Re-proofing will help, but it isn’t a permanent waterproof coating.
